Sonnenalp Hotel, Vail, CO
The Sonnenalp Hotel was inspired by a bed and breakfast in Bavaria that was opened in the early 20th century by a baker and an innkeeper's daughter. As the quaint German inn transformed into a celebrated resort, the Faessler family dreamed of bringing their European hospitality to the United States and picked the burgeoning village at the base of Vail Ski Resort for its new destination. Moor mud baths at the Sonnenalp Spa, fondue at the Swiss Chalet and après ski at the King's Club are some of the quintessentially European traditions guests can enjoy at the resort. With its history of family ownership, the Sonnenalp aims to provide superior guest service, featuring just 112 luxury suites and 15 hotel rooms -- all with either a view of Gore Creek or Vail Village. The Sonnenalp also offers an exclusive ski concierge, just steps from Gondola One, where guests can take advantage of personalized service with top-of-the-line rentals, secure ski lockers and a private lounge and cafe. But non-skiers needn't stay home! Guests looking for adventure can try their hand at snowshoeing, snowmobiling or dog sledding -- or take a relaxing dip in one of Sonnenalp's indoor and outdoor pools with views of Gore Creek.
